Meet Dr. Phillip A. Pullen, DO

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon and founder of SunCare Orthopaedics in Tampa, Florida. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Garden City Hospital through Michigan State University, where he served as Chief Resident, and has practiced orthopedic surgery since 2004. He came to the Tampa Bay area in 2007 and opened SunCare Orthopaedics in 2013.

He treats knee, shoulder, hip, spine, hand, wrist, foot, and ankle conditions, and he handles every step himself, from the first examination through recovery. Most of what he sees improves without an operation, so he starts with injections, bracing, and therapy, and recommends surgery only when it is genuinely the right answer.

Dr. Pullen built SunCare Orthopaedics around a simple idea: one surgeon from the first appointment through the last follow-up.

He performs the examination himself. He personally reviews your imaging and explains what he sees. If you need a procedure, he performs it. If you undergo surgery, he sees you during your postoperative follow-up visits.

If surgery is not the right answer, he tells you that plainly and discusses conservative treatment options instead.

EXPERIENCE

More than two decades in orthopedic surgery

Dr. Pullen completed his orthopedic surgery residency in 2004 and has practiced orthopedic surgery in the Tampa Bay area since 2007.

He founded SunCare Orthopaedics in 2013 so he could build the kind of practice he believed orthopedic care should provide: conservative treatment first, clear explanations, realistic recovery timelines, and continuity with a single surgeon.

Dr. Pullen has also served in clinical teaching roles with osteopathic medical schools for more than two decades while maintaining his orthopedic surgical practice.

A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or DO, is a fully licensed physician who completes medical school, residency training, and specialty certification required to practice orthopedic surgery.

Osteopathic medical education includes additional emphasis on the musculoskeletal system, body structure and function, and hands-on examination techniques.

That background is directly relevant to orthopedics, where evaluating bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, movement, and physical function is central to determining the cause of pain.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Staying active is personal to him too.

When he is not in the clinic or operating room, Dr. Pullen is usually on the water, in the air, or pursuing another active interest.

He is a pilot and a scuba diver and enjoys boating, fishing, and snow skiing.

Dr. Pullen has been an athlete throughout his life. That personal connection to activity is part of why returning patients to the things they enjoy is an important part of recovery planning.
